  1. Hi Sir
I was a commercial Airline pilot and have several passive and noise cancelling headsets.
Bose-x, You fly Mike, Telex ANC , and Softcom, and Telex passive systems.
Is it possible to use any of these headsets for Ham radio operations? I am an Amateur Extra AD8LX, and have an Yaesu FT0710 HF, and several mobile and HT VHF/UHF radios.

It would be great to use these aviation headsets for Ham stuff instead of them just sitting around collecting dust.

Can you recommend any good conversion kits, or DIY project kits for these radios and headsets?

Thanks for your help with this.

    Take care and stay safe.

  2. Hey Richard,
Thanks for your question. Connecting the headphones is usually not a big problem. The 6,3mm plug of civilian headsets are standard with most ham radios (or stereo systems) as well. Just plug it in and it should work.
The mic is a different thing since you need to feed the headset with phantom power. There is a circuit published by a DC engineer how you can do that with a 9v block battery. I modified this to use the phantom power provided by the Yaesu FT897 (schematics somewhere to be found on my web page). Seems to work OK, although I haven’t tested it extensively in the field. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the FT710 schematics and can’t help you with the specifics in this case.
Let me know if you’re successful connecting your headset.
    Cheers – Jens
